The Full Timeline

Everyone heals at their own pace. If you have pain, spreading redness, or no growth at all by month six, contact your clinic.

    Month-by-Month Growth Summary

Typical hair transplant progress and visible density by stage:

Days 1–14 (Healing & Scabs): Grafts anchor into the scalp by day 10; scabs wash away gently by week 2.
Weeks 3–12 (Shedding & Ugly Duckling Phase): Transplanted hair shafts shed while roots rest beneath the skin (~0% new growth visible).
Months 3–4 (First Sprouts · ~5%–20% Growth): Fine, wispy baby hairs begin breaking through the scalp; coverage still looks uneven.
Months 5–6 (Visible Coverage · ~35%–50% Growth): New hairs lengthen and darken; a clear cosmetic change becomes noticeable.
Months 7–9 (Thickening · ~60%–75% Growth): Hair shafts thicken significantly, filling in patchy areas across the hairline and mid-scalp.
Months 12–18 (Full Maturity · 90%–100% Growth): Final density and natural texture are reached (crown grafts may mature up to month 18).

    Common Questions

When does hair start growing after a transplant?

Most people see the first fine hairs around month 3 to 4. Growth becomes clearly visible between months 5 and 8, and the result keeps improving until 12 to 18 months.

Is it normal to lose hair after a hair transplant?

Yes. Between roughly weeks 2 and 12, most transplanted hairs shed. The follicles stay under the skin and start producing new hair a few months later.

What is the ugly duckling phase?

It's the stretch around months 2 to 4 when transplanted hairs have shed and new growth is thin and uneven. It's temporary and a normal part of the timeline.

Why is my crown growing slower than my hairline?

Crown grafts commonly take longer to mature, often up to 18 months, partly because of blood supply and how hair in that area grows and spirals.
